Christening - any ideas

Hi
My DS is being Christened in September. What is expected these days of a christening, and how much is it going to cost?
Do I need to do things like table favours etc like for a wedding? I have no idea where to start, and there is not a lot of money.
The annoying thing is, I am religious, and I want my DS to be christened for religious reasons. However, none of the family either side are church goers, the godparents are not religious (though have promised me that they will support DS in the religious side of life) and it is going to end up as a tiny bit of church and a big lot of celebration!
To add to the mix, my MIL has sadly passed away (funeral tomorrow) which means, I think, that those who may not have otherwise come to the christening will attend. Don't get me wrong. I am really happy to see loads of friends and family, but I have no idea how many are likely to attend, what sort of food to supply etc.
The christening will be part of a service that will end around 12 noon, which means that if we are getting together after church, then I do have to provide something to eat. Do I need to provide alcohol? Will I be okay with a buffet, and what sort of stuff should be included (you can tell I don't get out much:rotfl: )?
Help - I don't know where to start!

I think you can keep it simple if money is an issue. Unless you know that your family and friends drink a lot then not much wine is usually drunk at a lunch time event because of driving. I think these event are fine alcohol free! Buffet is always good - although depending on you cooking facilities/ability then a couple of casseroles and jacket potoes and salad with pudding afterwards might actually be easier and cheaper- can suggest recipes if needed/wanted.These events usually ends with coffee and christening cake.
I go to lots of similar events and simple is good! People love an excuse to get together and you are kindly providing it and giving them lunch to boot!
No need for fancy table decorations etc unless it would given you joy to do so!
Hope you enjoy it.0 -
Thank you, nearly newbie. I think I will keep it as simple as possible. I am looking forward to seeing everyone, and I hope that all can have a good time. Casseroles sound a great idea (and one I would never have thought of, though I have the facilities), and I will be getting the cake from Costco.
I'm quite glad that I don't have to do table decorations - who has time with a baby!?

Buy or make some invitations to send out a few weeks before, asking people to reply by x date...that should help you sort out the catering, once you know how many to expectLaughter is the sun
