looks like your autorun has been disabled.
There is a registry setting somewhere, but I dont suggest u go into it if u dont know regedit. U might be able to change it using TweakUI
Download it from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
then run TweakUI (should be something like Start/All Programs/Powertoys)
in TweakUI go down to "My Computer", select "Auto Play" then select "Types"
should be some checkboxes there
U can do more things with TweakUI apart from autorun.
There is another freebie tool out there but cant remember wot its called:hello:

oh, your other problem. Forgot about that. "Windows Explorer Encountered A Problem"
Does this problem happen when u put in CD's or when u perform a certain action.
it could be some conflict somewhere, have u installed any new software recently? When u start windows explorer, are u doing Start/My Computer?
does the problem happen if u click on Start/My Documents?:hello:

yes it usually starts when i maybe click on an icon on my desktop or something similar..
i am not techie minded so if you could be simple please thank you..0 -
sometimes its good to look at the event log but I find that difficult to do remotely.
It could also be some virus/spyware causing a problem. Have u tried checking for viruses and spyware? there is a sticky here, suggest u read that. Also sometimes worth running Hijack this and posting log here.
Another thing to try is running sfc, but first do the above
It could be something altogether different, even a recent software install may be causing some conflict.:hello:

i will read the sticky, i run spybot, ad aware and McAfee virus scans..
p.s. what is sfc?0 -
sfc = system file checker
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
it may not be applicable to you though
Personally Im not a fan of spybot or adaware. I personally used to use XOFTSpy and now more recently SUPERAntiSpyware
AVG have a decent spyware checker http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
u could try installing that as see. Note u have to do manual updates.
McAfee is good antivirus, its what I use on my work laptop but for home use, I use AVG.:hello:

Regarding autorun, try this alternative method, thats if u manage to open up windows explorer.
right click on your drive, select properties then select the AutoPlay tab and go from there.:hello:
