I have bought a new chopping board and 2 knives, one for bread and one for cutting vegetables.

I need to buy perhaps one or two saucepans, I have done a search already but the results were mostly competitions or about Tefal irons.

I would like one to boil eggs and another one to cook mostly quinoa, couscous, rice and other grains, then I tend to add vegetables and tinned chick peas and other tinned beans at the end and mix together. I would like to make enough for at least 2-3 meals at a time. I cook porridge in the microwave. I have an electric hob.

I would like them to be as easy to clean as possible. Is aluminium better than stainless steel or non stick? I have no idea what is the best type to buy.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to look for, I have been looking at Tefal pans, they seem to be on offer a lot.

We have QVC's cooks essentials and they are very good, we must have had them for at least five years and the non-stick hasn't shifted despite the fact that we used metal utensils on them.
  • When I moved into my new place recently, I bought a couple of stainless steel pans (one small for boiling milk/eggs etc) and one larger for general cooking. Also got a non stick heavy based frying pan - coupled with the stock pan I already have, this is pretty much all I use.

All pans from TK Maxx - really good value and high quality. I prefer the stainless steel for over the non-stick but easy to get cleaning products which will suit both.

I bought two new pans a few months ago and am really really pleased with them. They are made by Denby and stainless steel. I find them quite easy to clean - I haven't even had to use a brillo pad on them - they wash up nicely!
I am lucky in that I have a outlet park near me and got them half the normal price - about £25 for Two Saucepans and a bonus Frying pan - which is non-stick and is brilliant - its the best one I have ever had! I only ever rinse it under running water..........it comes up immaculate!
my advice when looking for pans is to pick them up - if it seems 'heavy' and the handles are riveted on firmly - then its a good quality pan and should last years! beware of lightweight pans and screw on handles!
  • I've got the Ikea 365 saucepans in various sizes and they are stainless steel, very good natured, easy to clean (anything caught on the bottom comes straight off with a soak in warm water) and very reasonable to buy in the first instance. I do lots of cooking and can't reccommend then highly enough, Cheers Lyn x.

In 2008 I had to buy some new saucepans at an expensive time in my life and so went for the cheapest I could find in Asda. Bog standard thin-based stainless steel. However, they have surprised me and are easy to use and easy to clean. For a more even heat I would always use Meyer (can pick up 2nd hand fairly cheaply), but if what you need them for is quite simple e.g. boiled eggs I wouldn't bother with the expensive ones.

another vote for stainless steel. Dead easy to clean, and if you DO happen to burn something in them, simply soak overnight with dissolved (clothes) washing powder/ tablet and rinse well.

About 3 years ago I had to replace old stainless saucepans whose plastic handles were disintegrating, though the actual pans themselves were still perfect. I had had them for about 20 years.

Bought a similar, new set, not the cheapest but by no means the most expensive either, and they still look brand new, despite being used every day.

I also have a stainless steel milk / porridge pan which has a stainless handle, and I can't remember how long I have had it, I do know that it was not new when I got it though, but from a jumble sale or similar. It is still perfect.

You can scrub them in the sink, or they happily go in the dishwasher. Couldn't recommend them more.

as you cook a lot of grains you might like the type with draining lids like these......http://www.amazon.co.uk/Judge-Vista-Draining-Piece-Saucepan/dp/B004QEPA56/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1374486997&sr=8-2&keywords=judge+vista+saucepan+sets They come in a stainless steel or non-stick version, other sizes too and they have them individually in TKMaxx at the moment. :)

Not knowing your budget may I suggest checking out your local supermarket. A few weeks ago a I got a large non stick saucepan with glass lid for £3.00 from Mr.M. and it's been fab.
