Buying a watch - best on-line? Pre Owned?

I want to buy a new watch, I was thinking of upto £1000 or so - anyone got any recommendations for sites? I'm not averse to pre-owned but what pitfalls do I need to look out for?

I haven't bought new since I discovered the pre-owned market.

Ebay obviously is one place and though it's maybe not the cheapest, you do get some protection paying via Paypal.

There are also several watch enthusiast forums which have sale/wanted sections and I've bought via them on the strength of the sellers previous trades - places like timezone.com, watchnet.com, tz-uk.com Buying from a private seller is maybe the riskiest but you are cutting out the dealer so price should be better.

Before buying, familiarise yourself with the watch you want by visiting an authorised stockist. Watches with original boxes and papers Soon as you receive your purchase, visit a jeweller you know is familiar with the brand (pretend you want to sell) and they will soon tell you if watch is authentic.

As for the comment in post 2, yes this is a money-saving site. It doesn't mean everything has to be low-cost.
