Every other month, I take a bucket of hot water with disinfectant and bleach in outside to the drain. I take up the grid and scrub it with a scrubbing brush in the water getting rid of general scum, odd bits of hair etc. and scrub around where the grid was in place. I then pour another bucket of boiling water down the drain, still with the grid off, followed by a good dollop of bleach, and replace the grid. Then it stays smelling fine.
Check when you lift the grid you don't have a blockage.
Also, make sure anyone with long hair takes a brush into the bath or shower with them and combs conditioner through their hair so most of the stray hairs go on the brush, rather than down the plug hole, and can then be put in the bin afterwards. I found clumps of hair in the drain can add to the smell.
Good luck.

I would definately check for blocks or slow moving 'flow' as this is the cause of most smells coming from drains - obviously Bear Family's advice is good maintenace if there is no underlying ('cus the pun) causes!I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0

Try making up a strong solution (details usually on the packet) of Soda Crystals, in boiling water & pouring down the drain. If there is any grease build up in the pipes that should help clear it. You may need to repeat it to clear the drain. Then do it every so often.
Once it is clear though, remember not to pour fat or other yucky stuff down the sink! The more gunky the pipes are, the more stuff can get stuck in there and fester...... yeeeeuuuggghhh!!!!!0
