advice regarding guarantee needed

My car cd/radio/mp3 blaupunkt player has stopped reading discs.Ibought this in feb 2006 and i believe it has a 12 month guarantee but I remember reading somewhere that goods should be working for longer than 12 months and you can ask shop (Halfords) still to get it repaired.Is this correct?

As 'Toots' stated the items sold should be sold 'fit for purpose'. So, I personally would not expect my kit bought from Halfords to pack up within 12 months, and I doubt trading standards would do so either.

When I had problems with another retail park outlet regarding my failed laptop, and i was clearly getting nowhere trying to resolve it - the retailer said it was the manufacturer's responsibility, the manufacturer said it was the retailers but they would fix it for me for £550 - I contacted my local trading standards.

Following their instructions, which required me to write a letter to the head office of the retailer, and including the words 'fit for purpose' I received an acknowledgment within 48 hours from the retailer and a fully repaired laptop within two weeks - all at no cost to myself.

In addition to Toots' suggestion, I'd call your local trading standards.
