Bank charge - what can I do?

I've read the recent information about reclaiming bank charges but up till no I have never had any large charges.

My partner and I have our own separate bank accounts but also have a joint account in which we deposit money each month, then all the bills, food etc come out of this account. We have had a pretty bad few months with money and this account has taken the brunt of it all really. Today I recieved a letter regarding this account from HSBC, stating that as the account had been over the aggreed overdraft limit for the last 6 months and therefore they have charged me £125.00 for an arrangement fee. I just wondered where I stood with this. Is this allowed or do I have the right to complain and if so what would be the best way about going around this. This is money we could well do with at the moment.
