CHEAP wedding

Options
Hi,

Me and the other half want to get married but, like most people we have a tight budget.

I've come here to tap into the illimitable resource of money saving experts!!!

Can anyone give me tips on how to save? I mean, big saves or things people have done that worked out really well!

Also, if anyone knows, can you provide me with links to deals or great locations (that give great deals)

Thanks :)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. my best suggestions would be:

    1) Subscribe to your local freecycle and freegle groups, you may find some very useful furniture or tools to hand make some lovely decorations.
    2) Check if any of your memberships (insurance, breakdown cover, work, etc) have an "exclusive offers" area. A lot of them have discount codes and money off wine and things.

That's all I've got for now, I'll be back with more I promise!!

If there's anything that you won't want to keep afterwards, then buy it used and sell it on afterwards - the 4 tier cake stand we wanted would have costed £40 to rent, but we bought it on ebay for £28 and sold it on for £32. Our cake tins cost us £30, but we sold them on for £40.

Look on ebay in the wedding section for local sellers, you can pick up some real bargain job lots of decorations etc that are collection only! Check out Ikea for really cheap tealights and tealight holders (£2 for 12 I think), glass vases for £1, lanterns, and flowers 50p a stem in the sale, make your own table decorations :)

I'm trying to have a low budget wedding too! Hiring a local hall for £60 the day and decorating it up ourselves and having a buffet lunch, certainly going to cost less than most wedding venues, and I'm thoroughly enjoying getting the chance to be creative and make the wedding special and different! :)

Looking forward to reading everyone elses tips too!!

We got married for £500, I wore a suit I already had and my wife bought a summer dress I'm not sure where it was from though. We had the actual wedding at the registry office, we went for the basic version. The reception was held at our local social club, I can't remember the exact figure but it was less than £50, my parents did the buffet but we paid for the supplies. We 'splashed out' on a free bar but as there was only immediate family it wasn't expensive.

If you're not bothered about having fresh flowers then you can make savings there too.

I got foam red roses which look really life like, with a wire frame that had pearls on, and each rose studded with either a clear or a teal diamonte in the middle, and 4 button holes for only £40. The florist said ALOT of brides are doing this nowadays as they get to keep their bouquet!
  • Do you have any friends who have talents you can tap into?
We have a (I consider) small budget of 2k. My brothers girlfriend is great at cake making so she is going to do our cake as a wedding gift. I am doing my own bouquet and those of the bridesmaid and MOH, getting the flowers from our local market. We are having candles instead of flowers on our tables in candle holders we picked up for £4.99 each.

Invites we got from Vistaprint, it has cost under £20 including delivery by using flyers as evening invites and paying a few pounds for better quality card as you can get 50 flyers for free if you receive their emails. They are due to be delivered this week so I will let you know how that turned out. The actual wedding invites were a little over £6 for 10 and we got 20.

my dress is from Monsoon, bridesmaids from Bon Prix
my invites are self decorated from http://www.therange.co.uk/papermania-50pk-brown-tall-card-blanks//the-range/fcp-product/60443
Late (3:30) wedding so just 1 meal to buy
we are having a raised area of a lovely pub/coffee bar for our meal, not exclusive, but local and that means ALL my friends can come later at no cost.
Simple glass vases of sweetpeas for the tables, and bouquets for us.
I will make silk button holes for the 'olds'
The cakes will be from M&S or Sainsburys - off the shelf. M&S sell pillars and a video for stacking your cakes - simple ribbon and sweetpeas on top for a subtle look.

We're getting married on a Monday which has saved us a lot and also has meant that our suppliers have given us discounts too. We're also having a late ceremony so we only have to feed people once. And we're providing our own booze.

  • Whilst I know links to other sites aren't really allowed here, joining their forums are great to find second hand or even new items that brides have bought and then are selling on. My favourite was You & Your Wedding. They also have great wedding reports on there which are great to read :)

I bought quite a few items and used the same sites myself to sell things on (for free, not like eBay!) and the target audience are already there.

I made my own pocketfold invitations - I requested lots of free samples from some lovely companies to get my inspiration and then used PDA Card & Craft to buy the individual bits and made them myself. We had so many comments on them and it was lovely making them myself. I also used the same site to buy bits for our Save the Dates and Evening invites, all in the same theme.
