Due to mechanical problems DH's boiler suit is covered in diesel. How can I wash it without it leaving a diesel smell in the washing machine? Last time I tried all the remedies on here to get rid of the diesel smell in the machine but in the end only a bought washing machine cleaner could shift it. The upside of it was that due to vinegar, bic of soda, soda crystals, etc the washing machine had a thorough cleaning out ;) Should I soak the boiler suit in something beforehand? Bic of soda??

I can sympathise - I've had many diesel (and worse) drenched items from hubby. I would soak in washing powder overnight (and stain remover is you have any) and then wash as normal. Once it's done I'd run a 60 or 90 degree wash (as hot as you can) and put some white vinegar in the dispenser.
If you have an old towel or some rags throw them in and they will also absorb some of the smell.

It's worked for me the last few times but only once I'd had some diesel smelling items as hubby had washed his stuff himself and not mentioned it before I used the machine again.

    Good luck:D

Not sure, but soaking it beforehand sounds like a good start, maybe using bicarb or Biotex or some kind of scented stain remover stuff. You might still have to do a hot wash afterwards with no laundry in the machine.

My suggestion comes following an unfortunate incident when I mixed up a plastic container of white vinegar (for use as fabric conditioner) with one of white spirits.... No amount of washing got rid of the smell in the clothes but a short stint on the washing line did. I'd suggest that prior to washing you stick the boiler suit outside on the line until as much of the diesel has evaporated as possible and most of the smell has gone, then try the soaking (perhaps washing soda crystals?) and finally stick in the washing machine. Someone also told me that washing machine/dishwasher cleaner is really just washing soda anyway.

I'd air the car as much as possible.. it does seem to evaporate eventually.
Can you lift the stinky bit and leave it out for a while?
