First Bristol terrible

They never show up on time. Using old bus on student bus route. After numerous complain to the company and Bristol City Council still no improvement.Terrible company. Sorry for the moaning:mad:

Use my personal experience as exam on 17 May 2007 I need to do the 9am exam therefore I had been waiting at the bus station at around 7:55 am for the X84 to come. However I had been waiting for thirty minutes and all I can see was a single decker x84 bus coming. Me and several other UWE had no choice but to abandon the journey and force to take a taxi instead. Totally I spend 17 pounds on this taxi journey.

Nothing changes. I still remember the words to a local song ...

    Bristol buses. Oh, Bristol buses,
    In their British racing green.
    Thundering through our glorious city,
    Seldom heard and never seen.

Glad I have a car then, as I'm moving to Bristol.

You obviously haven't driven around the city then. The problem is that the basic road layout hasn't changed since the Middle Ages. The city father's haven't helped either: the local joke is that they've done more damage to the city since WW2 than the Luftwaffe ever did during it!

I hope you kept a receipt from the taxi. Write to First and ask them to refund the taxi fare. Also contact the Traffic Commissioners (in the 'phone book: their office is just on Temple Wharf) and let them know about your experience.
  • Welcome to Bristol Liz! To echo Stephen's comments: Don't even bother trying to drive around peak times. I live in the city centre - If I go out at 5pm a 20m journey by car will take me an hour and a half. Average traffic speed in the centre is 10-20mph - equivalent to London.

The OP left something out: The stupid prices they charge for the buses.

For anybody in Bristol wanting to go short journeys I'd recommend cycling. There are a surprisingly large amount of cycle paths and lanes across the city now and you can bypass the infurating traffic management of the centre. Go to the SusTrans office just off College Green (Near Direct Line) for more info on cycle routes and get on Freecycle to get a second hand bike. What could be simpler! :T

I forgot that. When I was at school, you wouldn't dare try to pay with a £1 note. Nowadays, a £5 note probably isn't enough!

Cycling - anyone who does this in any city deserves either a Victoria Cross or a straitjacket (maybe both). I've been scared sh*tless on a bus. Actually, the trick to driving in Bristol is to remember which lane you need to be in and get into it as early as possible.

PS. Having said all of this, you could probably say most of it about any big city, and I wouldn't want to live or work anywhere else!

Not sure I'm going to brave the centre by car! Looking for a place on the outskirts, as our new jobs are on the edges anyway.

Update: they only agree to refund 2 day pass as goodwill gesture. Also I file the complain to university local newspaper and BBC watchdog. Enough is enough.
Consider first do funfare cost a pound to london.
In contrast 5 miles single ticket in Bristol cost 2.6.It is totally rip off!!

I have not used a first bus for 2 years...and won't until something is done about their prices!!! And the timing!!! When I lived in Patchway I waited over an hour for a 75 bus which is supposed to run every 12 minutes!!!

If me, the OH and the kids all wanted to go into town from ST George, it would cost about £15, or we can drive in, park in the Gardiners car park and walk into town. hmmm tough choice.

I used to have to use 4 buses a day just to get the kids to school..no more. Join the Boycott !!!!
