Find your local Auction house. They often do general and household clearance sales. I bought a single divan with drawers and nearly new matress and headboard for £12.
Look for auctions in the local paper..... Also Hotels closing down
Try the local household recycling centre also people chuck away all sorts and not always cos it's worn out..... Granny dies and all her furniture goes up the skip.

Maybe look for a 2nd hand frame and buy a new mattress. They will still be at least £35 for a matress, mosy diy places like Focus sell cheaper matresses. Also try the DIY stores for sales..

I can totally understand your reasons for a new mattress, although a second hand bed would be exceptable for me, if you consider the cost of a new mattress with a second hand bed it's still not going to be really cheap but its possible if you go for a really inexpensive mattress.

Have you considered applying for help since your in receipt of income support I believe you should be entitled to a loan or grant possibly to pay for extra needs that your IS doesn't cover, if you have to pay it back i'm sure it would only be a couple of quid a week ? It may be the piece of mind you need to ensure you get what you require.

Having said that I struck lucky some years ago and got a double bed and mattress both brand new and still wrapped from the Loot ad's paper for £40 the couple had just bought a load of new stuff and were splitting up. It may be worth your time to at least have a look through ad's papers, you just never know.

    Good luck :)

You can apply for a Budgeting Loan if you have been on IS/Incomebased JSA for 26 weeks or more.

good idea i will have a look through adverts to see what is going.

don't buy a water bed. we bought one but had to sell it soon after. we found that we simply drifted apart ......

Don't skimp on the price of a mattress though unless you really have to.. The cheap ones are awful and will go saggy and need replacing pretty quickly..
