Cakes for Charity- buy from wholesale?

Hi everyone,

I'm making cakes for a charity event, and as such am going to make lots. I'd like to keep the cost down so I was thinking if anybody knows any wholesalers that sell like mixes, piping bags etc?

It'll probably work out cheaper to buy ingredients and make the cakes from scratch than to use mixes especially if you look for recipes that use oil instead of butter (the cakes will be healthier and much cheaper if you use rapeseed oil).

Don't buy special rapeseed oil though, have a look at the vegetable oils in the supermarkets and buy one that says it is rapeseed (sainsbury's own vegetable oil is 100% rapeseed and a fraction of the cost of the posh rapeseed oils).

Shop around for eggs as well - markets or lidl/aldi are often much cheaper than supermarkets for free range eggs.

I make a lot of cakes and it works out much cheaper to do from scratch than to buy ready made or mixes so long as I am sensible when buying the ingredients.

Aldi do sponge mix for 22p. Its a really nice mix to be honest, went down very well with my lot.

If you're making a lot, why not purchase ready done from somewhere like Costco? Might be more cost effective.
