Worried sick now.

Ive had a DMP payment set up for the last few months, thinking it was all going smoothly, I just assumed things were sorted.

I'm recieving letters from people claiming i still owe money and one threatened to send doorstep collectors so I called the company and told them I was with stepchange and they told me they didnt agree with that and wouldnt accept payments through stepchange, he said if I didnt make immediate payment I would face doorstep appointments and the charges will increase daily, I was scared and Im not in the position to pay off any more, they think i'm out of a job but I am working and I'm worried sick they will find out and demand money from me because I've lied to them, I cant physically pay any more, if i could I would, I dont want to be in debt if it was an option to pay more it would be done but I cant, im in tears here because I thought it was all sorted and yet this happens and its knocked me right back. I remember when i signed the agreement with the original company for the credit i added my employment details so it wouldnt be hard for them to find out, can they do this? Im so scared right now.

We agreed on a small amount to pay off today to as they put it stop any further action being taken on my account but this was only a temp set up and more money will be needed asap, I thought it would buy me some time to get in touch with stepchange and sort something out.

    hiya puresept

pls calm down but I know how you feel I was where you are right now some years ago,,,

pls do not call them ever again put everything in writing and I don't know if they are just threats to get you to call but I would refer you back to stepchange and explain the letters you have had and see if they will deal with this for you

im not upto scratch with stepchange note to self will check out later,,,,,

but please above all do not worry and cry things can be sorted I promise

im sure others will come along more experienced than me - but I just wanted to answer you and give you a little bit of hope until others arrive - and didn't want to leave after reading what you had wrote as I wanted to show you things can get better - but I really do feel your worry

I will sub to your thread and keep checking and make sure you are ok later

keep smiling its a sunny day :D

can you let us know who these are that are threatening the doorstep people visits - not sure if they can trace your employment info etc but as I said im sure stepchange can help you with this - and don't answer the phone to them neither or get into a conversation, always in writing or via stepchange, that's what I do anyway. others may help you differently and I would accept their advice too but above all pls do not worry anymore they cannot take more money from you if you don't have it in the first place

    ciao for now maz

    Hi there

    Which company is this.

Have a read of this the send them a written complaint, signed for, complaining at least about the unfair charges, refusing to accept your stepchange DMP and also revoke their right to visit your property.

I agree with the other poster - don't phone them anymore - you're trying to be reasonable with unreasonable people and you'll never win. don't open to the door to them either but don't be scared or allow them to make you upset, they try and intimidate people to get more money out of them . How much do you owe them and how much are you paying them?

I dont know why I was so stupid to call them, I know I shouldnt of I was trying to sort it out because I was scared, I dont own my house, I live with my parents who dont know about this and dont need people turning up at my door.

I've emailed stepchange and told them everything, im hoping they will come to some sort of arrangement with them, im so mad at myself for even calling them, I just thought i would be sorting out the problem.

If you read the OFT document posted by Happy Bunny then you will see that your creditor can't refuse to deal with Step Change. Under the heading Deceptive and/or unfair methods section 3.9c says

'refusing to engage, appropriately or at all, with a third party
representative, such as a debt adviser at a free advice centre or a debt management business, or with a debtor developing his own repayment plan'

Sounds like they are trying to bully you into paying which isn't on.

If you look on the website above or search this site there are template letters you can send saying you will only deal with them in writing

Thank you for all the replies, I'll check out the links, I do appreciate all the kind words.

They said they refused their offer due to the account being used up to the credit limit, I owed 255 and now its gone up to 355 and I offered to pay a low sum but they refused what I offered and I said that was all i could afford yet they said the lowest they could accept was £20, I was crying down the phone to the man and he said its my own fault and that calling stepchange was a waste of time because they wont accept my offer, I kept saying stepchange can talk to him but he said if i put the phone down it shows im not cooperating and that it would just further action taken against me because im refusing the pay even the lowest, I said i couldnt pay the lowest and that all i could pay was £5 at the most and he accepted that in the end saying it would be the arrangement to pay this every 4 weeks, I dont understand because looking on my stepchange page I was paying them £14 through stepchange so I dont understand why it says they wasnt accepting it. Have I just been conned into paying more money for something that is being paid already?

I've emailed stepchange and told them everything, Ive told them I'm not in an emotional state to deal with matters like this, for years I've dealt with depression and this isnt helping, I dont have doctors notes or anything to prove this apart from one appointment years ago. Im just trying my hardest to get my life back on track and this has knocked me back so much today.
