I got a weird letter about CGT today...

Hey all. Wondering if you can assist. I got a weird letter from HMRC today saying that their records show I may have sold a property which was liable to CGT.
It then goes on to talk about houses abroad and houses which aren't your main residence in this country. I have never had a house abroad and every house I have owned I have lived in full time. In fact, I've only ever sold one house in 2005 and that was handled by a solicitor so I have no idea to what they could refer.
Basically the letter states that if I think I owe capital gains then I can take part in this campaign so it will cost me less. Then it says if I don't put a notification in to them they will come after me.
I don't think I owe capital gains - unless one of you can advise differently - so what do I do and how do I find out why they think I owe it?
Thanks

Have you tried asking them?"fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0 -
No, because its Saturday and they aren't open.
That's why I have come here, to see whether anyone can assist me over the weekend. But thanks?!0 -

This in the bold sounds extremely dodgy. Sounds like someone is trying to scam you.
Ring the HMRC but not the phone number on the letter and ask
and also go to 'who calls me' and try the number on there.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Hang on...
... here's some other guy who appears to have had a similar letter.

It seems HMRC are running a Property Sales Campaign - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/campaigns/psc.htm - if (for some reason) you 'fit the profile', you may get a letter. Nothing to worry about, if you haven't actually sold a second property.0 -
Bizarre.
Love to know how I fit the profile as I've only ever sold one house. So do you think I should just ignore it?0 -
Just read that thread in its entirety. Thanks so much for finding it and posting it, you were really helpful.
I think that I will give them a call to set them straight just to err on the side of caution.
Thanks all.0
