My Barclays internet banking was blocked today after my BR on the 25th June - ironically, my other accounts at another bank that are listed as debts (big overdrafts) are still available If you don't have internet banking these days it actually makes it harder to manage your money. However, the counter clerk at Barclays was very helpful and I can have text alerts for large payments, a weekly balance text with last 4 transactions and I discovered you can have a fortnightly paper bank statement rather than monthly, I can also use my card at any link machine to get a mini statement. I have set up a spread sheet on my computer with all the dates and amounts for my DD's and will try and keep a record of spending - I will have to look on the bright side and treat it as an exercise in budget planning.
As BR is supposed to be a rehabilitation process rather than a punishment, blocking internet banking does seems a bit counter-productive but its the way it is so I guess I'll just have to get on with it.

Hi even though I have internet banking with co op i still write every debit etc in a little book, hopeless with spreadsheets.......its a matter of whatever works for us. I do not get Barclays at all its crazy.
  • Sorry to hear your online banking has been blocked  it really is the most ridiculous rule I have ever heard! I went bankrupt on 5 June, they haven't blocked me yet but I'm expecting it to happen any time!

I am finding the bank closing account thing odd! The only bank I have heard from is natwest who closed my step account within a week, I have never owed them a penny!

I can understand that basic accounts don't make money for the bank and that access to services like phone banking have a physical cost - the person in the call centre etc but if it was about money - why let me have multiple paper statements at a real cost when the internet banking probably costs less? The co-op allow internet banking but I couldn't open a post BR account there - the access to internet banking is probably why co-op got more than their fair share of BR accounts which, from what I understand is the reason they withdrew them. If it wasn't for Barclays - I'm not sure where we would all go?
