If your nearest and dearest was kidnapped.....

A bit of entertainment for a Friday night, with a mildly relevant theme, given the constant speculation about how broke or otherwise the average person is......

If your spouse, rugrat, or pet haggis was kidnapped at 5pm on a Friday, how much could you lay your hands on within 24 hours to get them back?

Note I said "could", not "would".... (I appreciate some of you may not be quite as attached to your haggis as I am to mine. ;) )

So.... the rules for the 5pm on a Friday challenge.....

-No new borrowing on credit lines that aren't already set up

-No remortgaging

--No selling investments

-No relying on employers, government, etc

-Just empty the accounts, max out the cards, and flog anything valuable to hand over the weekend.

Hmm - I think I could pay the kidnappers 5 grand a week to hang on to the DW and stop her spending and I would probably profit on the deal...
    I think....

I'd call his father who is richer than i am or his bosses to whom he is worth something more than I could raise. It would be one of those occasions where knowing when to delegate is the most useful thing to know.

I could renegotiate with the kidnapper(s) to either pay more a few days later or I pay others £1m to hunt them down and hand them over to me for disposal.

    I take it back.

You are obviously way more attached to your haggis than I am to mine.:D

I reckon I could raise 50k-ish with that kind of notice. If it was only 2-3 hours on a Friday night, it would be under 20k.

Of course, if my haggis was kidnapped by Somalian pirates while sailing around the world, and they could therefore wait until Monday morning, it would be many times that, but over the weekend I couldn't realistically convert assets and investments into cash.

I'm quite sure Mrs McT's kidnappers would pay me to take her back after 24 hours.

Yes, I'm afraid the "bank of under the mattress" is usually almost empty. ;)
