I saw the rabbit kits on Springwatch, rabbit are vermin on most farming land of course, but it still seemed rough on the little things. A bird killing a larger mammal is a bit wrong, isn't it?
If 90% of babies don't make it, however, that's just as well, really. There's enough damage done to crops by rabbits as it is.
I love eating wild rabbit, but now that I don't work out in Teesdale, it's harder to come by. I must ask at our butchers locally as he is good. Rabbit fattened on spring grazing, yum!

It used to upset me to see hare for sale in the butchers, I love hares -and being much rarer, there is less damage to crops by them.
Sounds hypocritical I know, but seeing hares is always a bit exciting, seeing rabbits is so mundane.

    Good Morning :hello: Hey There!
    *** Happy Doris Day - Day! ***
Please don't google this, it's not really (apart from on this thread :D)

You are more than welcome to slip in a DD song/film reference in your post today, as we celebrate all that is good about musicals :D

Shortie - a real testament to if at first you don't succeed - well done, I hope you are tucking into your bircher museli as I type :D

little_sweetie - I am loving the sound of 'Cobbled Curry' - it's exactly what I would do, make something with what was available.

starnac - no need to lurk lovely, you are welcome here anytime :D

Fortune - how good of you to pop by :D Loving the artwork - you've even caught the clouds in the bonnet of the MGB!

mcculloch - :rotfl:practical as always :D:D I tend to agree, all this fluffiness is lovely, but it is apt to get out of kilter.

I did end up spending yesterday. I couldn't resist a small pack of spuds and then spotted some aubergines that were reduced by 75% and lemons by 50%, so I grabbed some of those :j So a LSD, but not a NSD :( Also, I hereby declare, that aubergine bhuna, or oven-baked aubergine parmigiana will appear on June's meal-planner - you mind, we'll have a heat-wave now ;)

    Dinner last night was spinach pizza and HM wedges. It doesn't look very pretty, and the photo has been squeezed and squooshed about, so it is a bit fuzzy, but the spinach was really tasty. We both enjoyed it. Picture here;

    002_zps705f3d2d.jpg

Oh, and I forgot to claim a May *b* with the salad on Thursday night - it used up store cupboard beetroot and beans (haricot) so I can add 1 to my total :D

Dinner this evening, will be in honour of the whipcrackaway wild west, being a burger and all the fixin's :D I was going to make a special burger for the meal, but you'll recall that I found myself with a *leftover* tin of kidney beans the other evening, which I made into curry. Well, of course, they were for the burger....... and if I had done as I had intended, which was to make the burgers and freeze them - as a RM, this error would not have occurred! :rotfl:DOH! But I guess that is what happens when you are at the deadwood stage of the month and the cupboards are bare...................:rotfl: So, as it is, we'll *gussy up* a Jack Burger and it'll have to do - Que sera sera........ :D

Right, I'm away to tuck into some yoghurt and museli of my own. And it won't even be Tea for two at the breakfast table, as DP has been scoffing his brekkie as I've been typing this, the rotter! Never mind, if I ask him to Move over Darling at least I'll get a warm seat!

I'd like to break into a chorus of 'oh what a beautiful morning', but at present, it's looking a bit grey. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps it'll get better later on, we'll have to wait and see................

Thank you so very much for popping in, reading, commenting and joining in. I greatly appreciate it.

Let's all be careful out there, and remember folks, Please don't eat the daisies............

Till we meet again, I'll leave you With a Song in My Heart - see y'all later :p

    There once was a man........

Whoops sorry I'm still playing 'the pyjama game' so not quite awake ...

Those wedges look delish. I'm guessing they are parboiled, tossed in oil and roasted - if you could possibly bear to give me the recipe Greying I would 'perhaps perhaps perhaps' be very happy.

    Thank you

  • Morning Greying, you've had me 'Bewitched' and roaring with laughter and singing to myself - poor Mr T

We had HM pizza last night - cue me pulling all the bits which needed using up out of the fridge and throwing them, with gay abandon, onto the work surface. With the exception of a delicious salami which I pulled out of the freezer - bargainous L!dl item :)

Enough of this 'pyjama game' chat, I need to get a move on.

    Have a good day, Tilly x x

Ay up supersaver - bravo! for joining in :D Um, no, I don't parboil my wedges - I've lost too many that immediately *go with the water* (and yes, I know that you are only blanching them, but they go from rock hard to mash in a nano-second :D). I slice up my spuds (always try for 8 wedges per spud, unless its tiny), then toss them in oil/seasonings, bung them on a tray and cook at 180 degrees for anything from 40 mins - 1 hour. The downside is that sometimes you get *crunchy* wedges, but you never can tell. Last night, the potatoes (var. Harmony) were super soft and 'buttery' - apart from part of one potato, that yielded us both 2 slightly al dente wedges - how on earth do you mitigate for that? Oh, and I always wanted the parboiling to work, as it should cut down the oven use time. Now I have to accept that I have to use the oven for longer, and just make sure that there is always bread/cake/pudding/pizza in with the wedges at all times.

Tilly - all your lovely singing has paid dividends - the sun has appeared here :D Thank you. I too can now sing, 'oh what a beautiful morning' because it is :D

    Morning Greying,
    **Happy Doris Day -Day **
I should have known you would remember! You have had me humming quietly to myself too (OH still in bed as he's on a late shift tonight) and chuckling *With a Song in My Heart* What a great start to this grey day :D
    Pizza looks amazing...slurp...*It's Magic* !

I think that was the bit I found so hard to watch. I know rabbits are problematic for farmers and that they breed, well, like rabbits but they hadn't even opened their eyes before they got pecked to death :( I ate rabbit as a child but eat virtually no meat now and just couldn't face it. I've never eaten hare though... not *A Bushel & A Peck*

Thank you Greying - HM pizza and potato wedges it is (non-parboiled yayyy). I bought a half sack of potatoes from the farm shop last week for £3 (12.5kg) so I think we will be having lots of them this week.

I'll give them a go in the halogen oven too.

Sorry, you must get asked lots of times for the same recipe over and over so I do appreciate your reply.

Am feeling very chipper this weekend, having had my job confirmation letter - I will be following your recipes and Jack's book religiously from now. :)

  • Well done on the job offer! :j Hope it's everything you hope for.

A question, dear Greying and friends, can you cook rice pudding in a saucepan on the hob? I always used to make it in the oven but I broke my dish and never managed to replace it :o

    Any tips much appreciated....x

Absolutely, it is the only way that I make it - when I make it, can't stand the stuff :p But DP gets an occasional treat ;)

It takes ages and is prone to catch on the bottom of the pan. Don't leave it and stir frequently, removing from the heat if it does start to stick to the pan - then stir, and only put it back on the heat when it's unstuck itself :D Oh, and obviously you don't get caramelised skin - I can only imagine this to be a blessing :p
