2 PC's connected through same modem

Is it possible to run 2 PC's off the same internet connection without using a router ?
I am currently on cable modem but shortly (moving house) will be on ASDL, so would be interested in answer for either/both.

Thanks in anticipation,

Mr_F.

You could set up internet connection sharing, but then the one sharing the connection always has to be on for the other one to access the internet. If you don't want to use the internet on both at the same time you could just swap the ethernet cable between them.

Really though a router is the way to go for ease of use and an additional layer of security.

I want to do this too, but slightly differently.

I would like to know if I can just connect my Ubuntu Linux PC to my Windows XP PC which has the internet connection via a CAT5 cable between the network cards and share the connection that way?

You can get a cheap router for about a tenner. Seems like it would be worth it to save the hassle of having specific computers switched on in order to use another online.

My main XP box is switched on and connected pretty much from 8am-1am everyday, plus I already hav plenty of CAT5, so is it possible for me?

I want to go wireless one day but can't afford it at the moment. Trying to do this for free if I can.

Also one thing I forgot to set up ICS you will need two network adapters in the PC connected to the modem.

However I really would recommend getting a router, it's easier and safer.

As far as I know it has to be a cat5 crossover cable.
