Where do I stand if he comes back and says no as there has already been a precident set from another member of staff doing this?

Because if I did 8.30 - 2.30 I would then lose 2 hours per day of money..... and we dont take 'breaks' anyway... so would lose all that money for nothing...

No I obv wouldnt come back and clock out (which we dont actually do as I work in an office)

As I have said, someone in the office already does these hours one day... if this has been allowed can he allow me not to do them?
    Sorry, I meant 8-2.30.
I assume you get a lunch break at the moment, working 8.30 -4.30? It would be unusual to be paid for your lunch break, so you would still only be dropping the 2 hours a week that you want.
    No difference in ££

    8 - 3.30 with an unpaid lunch hour = 8 -2.30 in working/paid hours

If he says it doesn't suit the demands of the business -then it is perfectly legal I'm afraid.

I suppose I just need to keep my fingers crossed!

There really should be no reason why he says no as its only half an hour short per day and my work doesnt affect anyone/anything else and my manager is happy for the change in hours.

Just annoying because we dont have an HR department and it just seems to go by if he is in a good mood or not.

I have just had to explain all my childcare arrangements etc to him - i dont feel i should hav eto do this but if it helps sway him i dont mind.... it was the suggestion that I 'get a friend or someone' to collect him from school that got my back up! Especially as he wont allow anyone other than his driver, himself or wife to drive his children anywhere!

Thank you all for your help though xx

At the end of the day you are asking for a change in your contract, you have no right to the change so he could just blank say no. It means that its very reasonable for him to ask why it is needed.

Also, even if there was an HR department its unlikely they would make the end decision anyway

Also, check on whether you are actually paid for the lunch hour because this is very unusual.

If you are paid for your lunch break, but if rules dictate that working over 6 hours require a lunch break that cannot be taken at the end of the day, they you really are in a catch 22 situation...

Also becomes difficult for the boss in terms of how that would be managed if other people wanted the same situation (e.g. work through lunch and finish early), and from complaints being made were he to try and make that the case for everyone..

I once worked at a firm where this kind of "flexibility" was allowed, but unfortunately, the staff abused it and everyone was put back onto full days and forced to take their lunch hour around midday.

The problem was that a few decided to "work their lunch hour" and either start later or finish earlier, but in reality, they still had a "break" at lunchtime - allegedly eating their sarnies and having a cuppa whilst working, and general gossiping with the others who really were on a proper lunch hour. Their actual productivity over the lunchtime period was very low.

Are you really saying that you won't be eating or drinking anything over lunch, i.e. that you'll religiously stay at your work station and not start talking, eating or drinking?

All you can do is ask your employer. But, if you are lucky and allowed to do as you suggest, please don't abuse it.

I'd be looking to reduce lunch break to 20 mins and actually take it.

you can not take your break at the end of the day

IF you want to leave early you would have to get a earlier time to end the days work not just leave and take your break then if you get me
