Making something for my OH birthday

It's Darling's 24th birthday in 11 days and I have completely knuckled down on our spending however birthdays for the family are becoming an issue as his mother for instance wanted us to spend £20 on a bloody bowl for her. I bought her a £3 sign that said something about grandmothers and kisses and addressed the card from our son (then said we hadn't got her anything but our son had :P )
Now my other half says I shouldn't get him anything. And really I don't need to as his family will have got him enough but I would like to show him that I love him. I'm thinking about getting as much freebies or low spends (photo mugs etc) as I can. I was also thinking of making him a tshirt with a transfer of his gaming character on. He played an MMPORG a while ago and I know he has screen shots of his character on his pc.
I don't really want to spend more than a tenner but I have no idea whether I can give him a good birthday for that amount?
I've also then got to get him beer for his garden party without spending loads too!
Does anyone have any ideas for romantic presents? I can craft/sew etc just don't have inspiration.

Men are so hard to buy for, let alone make things for!
A couple of ideas, does he have a laptop/iPad/net book? You could make him a case for these by using old clothes, could even put a transfer on? Or embroider (sp?) a message. Same again for a mobile phone.
You could paint him a message on some wood if you have any knocking about, if not your sure to find some by asking friends and relatives. This would depend on if you have acrylic paints tho and some kind of varnish.
I made my hubby one off the kids for Father's Day, its says
'DAD
.... A son's first Hero
.... A daughter's first Love'
It was very well received by my 'don't do homemade' hubby. Obviously you could find a saying on the Internet or make one up yourself to make it really personal.

I would go for something personal. Are you good on the computer? You could make a disk with personal photo's, personal messages, some music.
It doesn't cost much, some thought and time and some know how.
Can you get a nice picture of the two of you or your family, in a simple frame, you can buy a sheet of alphabet stickers from a craft shop (about 99p) and add words or a personal message on the frame.0 -
Unfortunately I am never in photos. I just don't like being photographed! Otherwise it would have been such a good idea, I don't know if I can sneakily get a photo of us now. There are loads of photos of him and the child though.
At the moment I am thinking I might make him some mix CDs for the car. Just need to buy the CD printable paper stuff.
Then I would like to make something from him that my 2 year old can help with. I was thinking something we could paint.
I would love to find someone who can turn his gaming character into art, like the art that awlays accompanies games if that makes sense??Money money money.

You might be able to commission someone relatively cheaply on Deviantart. I've seen people offer a few pictures for free on a first come, first served basis before too.
Have a look as there may be groups dedicated to his game on there, and if there are, you may be able to find an artist willing to do a small picture for you within your budget, or possibly even free if they are simply doing it for fun/practice.0 -

How about killing two birds with one stone, and making him a beer "cake". You have to buy the beer anyway, but it gives you a nice way to gift it and shows you've put some thought into his birthday. You could throw in the odd extra, e.g. his favourite choccie bar, a scratch card, etc.
