I wanna vacuum cleaner

My vacuum cleaner is on its last legs. Well I did get it second hand 12 years ago so it's done good service.
I want a new one that is really efficient and reliable. Lightness a factor too as we have lots of steep narrow stairs.
Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner that works really well. If it's possible to get a good deal, go through Quidco or whatever, all the better.

Thanks all - particularly for the Which information.
My OH does not want a Dyson as he says they are heavy (I've never used one so don't know). We have steep narrow stairs so need something small and light that will fit on the stairs without falling on top of us (a hazard with the current one!)
I'm mainly concerned that it should work really really well, there are six of us in the house so it gets pretty dirty.
Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
We have narrow curving stairs and the long hose on the dyson works a treat on them.
Agreed it is heavy and I don't think it is all the marketing hype would have you believe, but I did get our one at a very good price. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
