Eco Dishwasher powder

Options
Not so much old style but must definitely be money saving. In trying to help my younger son's eczema, I've widened the remit to a try and create a chemical free as possible household and as we're about to run out of dishwasher stuff, that's next on the list. We only have a slimline dishwasher and it's only just today occured to me that in using the tablets we're probably over using plus there are individually wrapped so contribute to extra packaging so powder seems like the best alternative. Ethical superstore has BioD dishwasher powder but does anyone have any recommendations for stuff you can get from supermarkets / make your own as I'm not sure we've got the space for bulk ordering?

People have different results and different machines work differently, I personally hate the powder it clogs up the machine if you run it at lower temperatures.

Get a couple of the own brand ones, start at the value range and work your way up until you find one that suits your usage!

Tesco do a dishwasher powder called Daisy. It's actually quite difficult to find powders now. Most of the dishwasher products are tablets but I much prefer powder so I can decide how much I need to put in. Most days a very small amount will be enough but if I've got a lot of greasy pans then I can use extra.

Don't know of any home made dishwasher powders but would be interested if anyone has a "recipe". I make my own clothes washing powder and that works so why not a dishwasher one.

Have you thought about soap nuts. My mum uses these balls with them in and says they are great

Nightsky, thank you for the memory jog. I used to use soapnuts in laundry, had totally forgotten them. When the stockpile of best part of 20kg of washing powder has gone, I'll revert to them - might take some convincing the husband! Not sure I've heard of them for dishwashing though?

Lol sorry I completely misread the post and thought it was for laundry! However I am using a recipe for dandruff shampoo from this website (so far the results are great) http://www.crunchybetty.com/the-mother-of-all-soap-nuts-recipe-resources It does have a dishwasher detergent recipe quite near the top
