Returning a Suit with a damaged skirt

Hi
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a suit for a wedding. It's very definitely a suit - a skirt and jacket, neither of which would team well with other things I have.
Within four hours, the lining was hanging out of the bottom of the skirt. It's not come away or torn - it's somehow managed to stretch itself (although saying it's because I'm too big would be a bit of a non-starter as I bought it from a 'big shop' and it's a very big size so one would expect it to be made as suitable for biggies!).
I'm planning to take them back this week, and hoping that they'll refund both (total £85). I'm quite hopeful on the skirt as it's not fit for purpose, in my view, as hasn't even lasted for one wear. To me, the jacket's useless without the skirt.
I'm happy to accept vouchers if they won't give a refund, although I don't want a replacement (my next wedding's in September, and that's what I was planning to wear it next for - no point getting a new skirt that's possibly going to develop same fault in Sept as they'd be unlikely to refund me then).
Any advice on getting the jacket refunded?

As there is nothing wrong with the jacket, i doubt you would get a refund on it, unless they were sold as a set i.e 1 price for both.
I would be very charming and non agressive with sa and try to gently bring her round to your way or thinking that one is no good without the other.
Think that is the way to do it, the shop only has to change/refund on skirt.Crazy cat lady0 -
I think if the skirt is faulty - they would give you a refund on both pieces if they are matching. If they dont ask them to do it as a 'commerical gesture' - i used this in my last job as a refund reason when someone had a genuine problem but it didnt fit into any of the categories on the computer!
If they say there is nothing wrong with the jackedt - i would also say it reminds me of the skirt and the embarassement of it hanging down at the wedding etc......
If its the shop i am thinking of (i am a larger person!) i am sure they will be helpful

Cannot see why it should be a problem, most clothes shops refund anyway for items where the consumer has simply changed his/her mind (although they don't have to) and obviously the jacket isnt fit for purpose without the skirt. It seems to me that although skirts/trousers/jackets are sold separately these days its only to help people with getting good fits- the clothes are clearly suits. You could always ring Trading Standards consumer helpline to get some advice on how best to deal with the matter before you go into the shop here is the link http://www.consumercomplaints.org.uk/

I dont know if this will help but some years ago I worked at Debenhams and their code for returns was F=FAULTY
U=UNUSED/UNSUITABLE
D=DAMAGED
G=GOODWILL
E=EXCHANGE
so any returns had to fit into one of these categories and if in doubt we used goodwill lol,I totally agree in being nice to the sales assistant as they will help you all they can if you are nice to them(usually)
dee mum of 3 "before you buy ...think,how many hours have i worked to pay for this?,do i need it? or can i get it r&r in tesco!! hee heee:A0 -

I agree with dee mum of 3. I'm a manager in a shop and if you're nice to the sales assistant manager then they or more likely to want to help you. If you get their back up then the answer will be no.0
