Name changing and honeymoons!

We are getting married in December and have booked a honeymoon beginning of march (cheaper than December!) how does this work with my fianc! changing her name? We have booked in her maiden name can we just leave the passport and holiday all in her maiden name even though she will have taken my name from December?

Does the name legal change after the ceremony? Or is it when you decide to change it after the wedding?

Thanks :)

She'll need to travel in the name on her passport - she can change it once you have the marriage cert

Our honeymoon is booked with my maiden name, bit of a shame because we'll be Mr & Mrs but I'll still be travelling under the old name! May take a copy of the marriage certificate with us to say "Look! It's our honeymoon! Honest!"

She can use either name after she's married, as long as her passport matches the name it s booked under there won't be an issue.

You have booked in maiden name so the tickets will be issued in that name. The passport needs to match the ticket - exactly, no variation of surname or spelling of first name. It would be likely that if she wanted to travel with her married name she would not only need a new passport (to match the ticket) but the airline/travel company could ask for an administrative fee to change the name on the ticket.

(Of course, there is no need in law for a change in name at all.)

This. You absolutely must have your passport in the name you've booked in. Equally if you need any visas etc they must be in that name too.

and in reply to your other point, her name doesn't have to legally change at all, but once you have the certificate from the ceremony you are able to start using that name and you just go about changing all your various things, many of which will need to see a copy of the cert. I'm still working my way down the list nearly 4 months on...!

  • Just to mix this up a bit...

Can you book the flights and holiday in your married name before you are actually married? And then change your passport ready for the honeymoon in your married name?

Yes, this is what I did.
My passport in my old name expired the month we got married, and as we were honeymooning via the US, I had to have an up-to-date passport.
As I recall, you can apply for the new name three months in advance - you have to get the registrar / celebrant to fill in a form.
Your new passport will be valid from the date of your wedding, and you can book flights etc in the new name beforehand.

Speaking of the US, make sure that you apply for relevant visa's in the right name.
For the ESTA, I could only apply once my passport was valid, so the day I married. They can take upto 72hrs to process, but luckilly we wated 10 days before going on honeymoon.

Yeah, we booked honeymoon in my married name about 6 months before we got married. Then applied for my passport a few months before we got married. Was fab receiving it in my new name :-)
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
