Scotch Pancakes/dropped scones

Options
My granny used to make these but I don't have a recipe. She never weighed anything and it was only a simple recipe I'm sure. Probably just self raising flour, an egg, sugar and milk. I know for sure Golden Syrup was in the mix too.

Anyone know what the recipe might have been?

Thanks Pink but I'm sure she never used cream of tartar, not even sure what it is!

Did she use baking powder? All I know about cream of tartar is that it's an ingredient in baking powder.

Have a look on google and there are lots of links you can choose from.

I hope you find a recipe like the one your granny made.

Scotch pancakes are made with the usual pancake batter, but keep it very thick and add sugar, maybe a tablespoon (to taste). the batter must be thick enough to keep a shape on a griddle or a thick frying pan. Spoon a dollop onto a hot pan/griddle and when bubbles rise up in the pancake and pop, turn the pancake over until lightly brown. (dont make pan too hot) Take from pan and spread with butter! yumyum you can also add raisins to mix :j

I have used the Hookery Cookery recipe and it is very good.

I think it takes a lot of work to get to the no weighing and measuring Granny status, I'm nowhere near yet!

    the recipe i use is

    1lb plain flour
    1oz baking powder
4-5 oz sugar, you could use 4oz and tablespoon syrup
    4 fl oz veg oil
    3 eggs
milk to mix, about half a pint and splash of water, mix needs to be not too thick, needs to run slowly off the spoon, secret is to beat plenty air into mix
this makes about 45 med pancakes
cook on a girdle or whatever and turn when bubbles begin to pop, the first few will let you know if you need to adjust the heat

When I make them I just use egg, flour and milk. For myself I just beat one egg add some flour to make a paste and then add milk until its the right consistency. This isn't a particularly accurate way of doing it though.

I love to have them drizzled with golden syrup.

I make scotch pancakes from a Bero cookery book (they call them dropped scones) I don't put any golden syrup in the cooking but have been known to put it on top after they've cooked, although my favourite topping is butter. Here's the web address to the the Bero recipe http://www.be-ro.com/f_insp.htm

(Sorry I'm very new here and don't know how to do links properly :o )

    Hi all
I don't very often get to the os board, but after a day of inspiration I was looking for yeast free gluten free bread recipes (uh, didn't find them) but I *did* find this thread, I'm really looking forward to making some scotch pancakes. Thanks all!

I've never weighed ingredients for scotch pancakes/dropped scones or Pikelets as they are known down here,
As another poster said above mix flour and eggs to a paste with some sugar about a tablespoon of sugar per egg, use castor sugar too as granulated sugar tends to burn and leave spots, then add milk and keep mixing until you get the consistency of salad cream, heat your griddle slowly, low to medium constant temperature is what is needed, flip over once you see holes develop in the upper side.
I always use vanilla sugar when making them, simply fill a jar with sugar and add a vanilla pod after a week it will be ready.
