Bank cant trace account and remove default?

I have an unpaid default of £390 on an old account that was closed three years ago. Having only just discovered this default I am trying to pay it off, however the bank cannot trace the account. The account was with A&L but is registered with Sandander.

Anyone got any idea how I can go about paying this off to get it signed off as "Settled" on my credit files? Or just get them to write it off as settled as they cannot trace the account?

I need the quickest way possible please - not one which involves 6 months worth of writing letters.

if they can't prove the default they should remove it. try that with the incentive of paying it off.
