Boilers

Howdy

Does anyone have any advice on condensing/combi boilers. My old baxi bermuda back boiler is olde now (about 16/17 years). What is the best way to go?

  • last year I had my back boiler ripped out downstairs and replaced with a combi boiler upstairs. also had a one new radiator. I used a local gas engineer, all in cost me £2000. under new regulations they have to do a survey, luckily I didn't get enough points on it so saved some money as the government have imposed some rules. Because of my score on the survey/tick sheet I didn't fall into government rules.

Just make sure you get a few quotes. you get more for your money with a combi boiler. But can take you a while to get your money back on it. If there's nothing wrong with your back boiler then do you really need to change?

Mine was packing in and the pilot kept going out, ignition was bust so couldn't relight it. £60 a pop to get it relighted, hence why I got a new central heating system

Might not be any use to you but felt like a waffle anyhow lol

    Good luck :)

  • well were just drinking our way through the rest of the night so decided to tell you my boiler life story....hopefully your still awake.

what trade were you if you don't mind me asking? (waiting for a reply might waste 3 minutes of my night, as I try and put off that I'm back at work tomorrow and have wasted all weekend getting drunk and half attempting to break dance)

Is your back boiler working OK? A modern condensing boiler will be more efficient but the cost of replacement and installation will almost certainly mean that you will not make any financial savings except in perhaps the very long term - maybe not even then. A replacement installation is probably going to cost in the order of £2000. This money in a savings account will earn you at least £100 a year so you must save at least that on your fuel bills to be in profit. Bear in mind also that modern boilers are less reliable the the old back boiler, because they are more complicated, and repairs and service charges are also higher.

the combi condensing boilers have a slightly shorter life span than a combi boiler tho they are more efficient. just had my boiler serviced today and they said the government stipulates all new boilers fitted must be condensing and they are registered by Corgi. so that looks like the govermnent removing our freedom of choice again if its true!
