Default and CCJ for same debt - when will it be removed from credit report?

Hi Everyone,

Hoping that someone can help!

I was going through a tough time towards the end of my degree and made a mess of my finances. I defaulted on a credit card back in May 2007 and a CCJ for the credit card debt was issued in July 2007 (CCJ was satisfied in 2008).

Since then I've got myself back on track and have not had any other defaults or CCJs and have a good repayment record with my other credit accounts.

The 6 year "anniversary" of the date of the CCJ is later this week, so I assume that it will shortly be removed from my credit report. The default is still showing up, although the six year anniversary was over two months ago - however, am I right in thinking that the default shows up for as long as the CCJ is still on my record? Once the CCJ is removed, will the default also be removed?

Does anyone know how quickly CCJs and defaults are removed from credit files once the six years has passed? Will it happen automatically, or is it worth me contacting Experian and Equifax to request removal?

I don't intend to rush out to apply for more credit, but I feel like I've been waiting forever for this to be removed from my credit history and would like to know when I can crack open the champagne!

Thanks in advance!
Jo

They should come off after exactly 6 years. If they haven't then you need to complain to the credit reference agency.

    Thanks Rizla King!
So should the default have already come off my credit report?

Yes it should, if it is more than 6 years from the default date.

Oh, and if Equifax will often try to deny it is their fault and blame the creditor. That is complete and utter nonsense. It is up to the credit reference agency to remove the default on time.

Thank you so much, I will contact them today and ask for the default to be removed.
I have all the original paperwork relating to the default and the CCJ so I'll get ready to argue with them if necessary!

Thanks again, you've been really helpful.

Experian removes defaults six years from the default date, usually at midnight I think. The CCJ doesn't affect this.

As I see it, the default should come off at the same time as the CCJ. Effectively, the contract relationship broke down at the time of the CCJ and that is when the default should have been recorded.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
