Buying older versions of a game series

I have got into Xbox gaming rather late on and have bought the latest series of games like Assassin's Creed, Halo, Saint's Row, Call of Duty etc
I can see the older series of these games are fairly cheap second hand and was wondering wether it's worth getting the them and ultimately the whole series?
My worry is that as I have played the latest versions, I will just feel the older versions are lacking something that was added to the newer version?
I anticipating there are lots of other people who have played the whole series of these games. But also others who might have come in at the same sort of point as me and are wondering the same

I can say yes to Assassins Creed as the other games in the series add to the story. I really enjoy this series and can't wait for the next game! I don't think anything will be lacking much other than it may look a little different.
Plus if your a Xbox Live Gold subscriber Assassins Creed II is available free from July 160 -
Personally, I thought the first Assassin's creed was incredibly repetitive and consequently quite dull, so I'd skip that one...but in general, older games are well worth playing....each of the Call of Duty games has quite a strong storyline, Gears of War is best played start to end, even Halo has quite a story arc...The older games are going to cost a couple of quid to pick up and give you 10 hours+ of entertainment, so well worth the investment.0

Had forgot they were going to give this away as Assassins Creed II was the game that had recently come through as cheap, so thanks for the reminder!0 -
A word of advice, you might be able to pick up the edition of Assassins Creed: Revelations which contains the original Assassins Creed, look out for that if you can pick it up cheap enough.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

I agree with this, if a 2nd hand game only costs you a couple of quid even though it is spending money it is a good "investment" due to the hours of entertainment you might get out of it; it is much better than spending a couple of nights at the pub for instance lol"Don't blink. I really have to do things in order - Films, TV shows, games - so as not to be disapointed with the older stuff. I'd rather not go backwards, but how often do you hear of stupid new features that wreck games? If you go back you can take that hit on graphics and 'polish' for better playability.
Doing the oldest stuff first also saves you money on consoles and PC hardware, and especially with PCs, you'll be able to play the games with far more detail, with far cheaper hardware.0 -
If I buy a new game I always buy the first game in the series if ive never played it before0

Like FORCING people to play together a-la-simcity when all they want to do is play on their own for a while?
I think I have mentioned elsewhere how much I hate this drive to make everyone play together, to me that is a massive step backwards, especially when most of the time you find people simply trying to wreck your game."Don't blink. I would say its worth it, if possible completely avoid newer versions and play from the start, by the time you catch up the current versions are cheap.
