in Cutting tax
Hi my son is 17 and is a full time student, he has been working part time for a year now, to April this year he was taxed £700 but earned less than the threshold. His tax code is BR/0. Who do we contact for a code his employer or the tax office? and of course a refund?
Thanks

he needs to contact the tax office to get a refund for 2006-7 and to get them to issue a new tax code for this year.
if he doesn't know his tax office either ask at work or use the telephone directory and phone the local office.0 -
Generally if you son has worked for the whole tax year with the same employer the case will be kicked out of the automated system and brought up to be reviewed manually as, when the computer does it sums, the amount of tax and the income doesn't add up. These cases are worked (although there are currently 2.5+ million cases that fit into this situation) and a repayment would then be sent without you needing to do anything.
HOWEVER, there is no saying how long it could take to get around to your sons case, and being a student he no doubt wants his tax code sorted for the current year and wants his money back
also if you son hasnt worked for the whole tax year (6th april 2006 to 5th of april 2007) then he will probably be written to requesting further information.
SO, the best thing to do is to write the tax office stating what he has done during the tax year, along with sending his P60, this way should he have any period of no employment the tax office at least know he wasnt earning.
so the best way of sending letter would be the following
1) Name, current address, national insurance number
2) state they believe they have over paid tax and would like an assessment carried out
3) list emp history for yr (see below example)
4) attach P60
emp history example
06 April to 10 June - Not Earning
11 June to 30 Sept - Moneysavingexert.com Pay: £2300 Tax: £500
01 Oct to 10 Nov - Not Earning
11 Nov to 05 April - martin lewis agency Pay: 3000 Tax: £660
06 April to present - martin lewis agency
All documents will be returned, if your sons tax code is amended he will receive a P2 stating it, and if he is due a refund it will arrive roughly 1 week after his P60 is returned. :T0
