Am I entitled to any tax gains

I work in engineering, I have just changed my job and will be PAYE and I have to purchase my own overalls and boots. I need to purchase my own tools, and I will be traveling to and from work with a day round trip being 75 miles.

Years ago I claimed for boots and overalls allowance, but don't know if that is still possible. A friend of mine, in the same trade but self employed thinks I can claim for petrol. I have seen the wash your overalls at home post so I know about that.

Any information on tax cutting would be extremely appreciated.

If you are travelling to and from a single place of work - then no - you can't claim for mileage.

If - however - you are travelling to work, and from there to another location (e.g. a customer) - you can claim 40p a mile for the journey to the customer and back. Your employer should give you an expenses policy which encompasses that - and if they don't give the full 40p - then you can top it up by going back to the tax man.
