Claiming Tax back

Hope this is in the right forum, anyway here goes.

I work on a part time contract, minimum of 8 hours per week, on 2 occasions I have worked overtime doing nightshift and when I got my wages for those weeks I was taxed.
I thought that there was a tax free allowance we are allowed to earn up to, £6,000 or £8,000 and seeing as the new tax year only started in april i have got no where near that lol.

Can I claim this back etc, its not a huge amount but it would come in handy.
If it makes any difference, I live in Northern Ireland incase our tax laws are different than in the rest of the UK.

Tax doesn't work like that. You don't have all of your allowance at the start and then suddenly start paying tax when you get to it.

Basically each of the tax bands are divided up throughout the course of the tax year. If you are paid weekly, each part is divided by 52.

So in Week 1 you have 1/52nd of your tax free allowance which this year is £9440. That gives you £181.54 tax free. Anything above that you will pay tax.

Are you sure that you are being taxed, if you were going over and under the monthly figure for tax I would have expected some of it to have been rebated. Is it possible that what you are referring to is national insurance? If you could give some figures it would clarify, to start with from last payslip you paid tax, gross, tax paid, tax code, week number, tax to date and gross to date.
