Monthly Shop Costs

Hi

Looking at some of the other postings I feel a bit of a fraud with my small £8000 debt, which is currently on a 0% cc until January. Don't really save anything so all that comes in gets spent, so I need to find a way of saving £8k by January.

Looking at my outgoings the one thing that comes to mind is the monthly shopping bill. For the 3 of us, OH, me and 8 year old we've so far spent £3412.71, which is around £150 per week, since January:huh:

It seams a lot to me but I'd be interested in what other people spend.

Thanks

Paul

Well last week I spent £106 but that included all the bulky monthly items like cleaning, washing and toiletry items. Yesterday I spent £33 and that is roughly what I spend for the remainder of the month so I guess I average out at £200 per month for 1 adult, 2 children and a cat. All of us have packed lunch as well.

we do a weekly menu which has helped us not only to reduce our food budget but also we look forward to meals because we vary them. Also, if we are making a big meal e.g. lasagne or stew then this will be used for the next day either lunch or tea. We used to spend £80 a week when there was 2 of us and get extras, now we have a 2 1/2 year old dd and spend between £40-£60 including toileteries, nappies etc.

Hi, we're a house of 4 (6 if you count the pets!!) - 2 adults, 2 under 5's, a big fat hairy dog and a cat. At the moment we're spending about 180.00 a month on shopping, and I'm really trying to bring this amount down.

On the up-side though, I get loads of clubcard points!!!

Does your £600.00 a month include clothes and sundries (birthday pressies, computer games, treats?) if so, people may not have included this into the figures they have given above.xx

    Hi.

It does seem a lot. Do not try to cut back on things you need. When i first started food budgeting i was reading of people who feed their family of 4 for about £150. No doubt this can be done but you have got to find what is suitable for you!.

All I have done is switch to a weekly shop and just cut out the WASTE!!!!.

Meal plan and stick to your list. Do not think that you are a fraud at all just find something that works for YOU and you will see results.

    Good luck

Check out the grocery challenge on the 'Old Style' forum for some inspiration and tips on cutting back. I'm on my own and spend about £60-75 a month (now I actually budget, was probably twice that before). Keeping a spending diary is a great idea, and something I found worked for me was to keep all my grocery receipts so I could identify things that were excessive (or bought and never eaten), plus it means you can write a list before you go, know how much it'll cost, and keep to it :)

    Good luck.

we are currently managing on about £135 a month that is for me OH ds1 (3) and ds2 (2) that includes nappies, cleaning products e.tc. we use £100 split between tesco/aldi/lidl then £25 at the butchers (we are lucky that our butcher has some great deals) and we get a huge bag of dogmeal from a local farm for £8.50 which lasts the month for 2 medium dogs.
that money doesn't include things like petrol which I spend about £20 a month on (don't go far & try to walk most places)
we also save £30 a month for takeaways as we don't go out (only on the very rare occasion) but we are lucky that we both work so can afford to do this.

We spend about £220 per month. There's two of us, a baby (formula only, reusable nappies already bought :D ) and a dog. Charlie (the dog) has his own budget of £20, and the £200 is for everything else (food, cleaning prods, toiletries etc).
