Reference number on payslip

I have a 6 digit "reference number" on my payslip but have no idea what it is? Anyone know?

Likely to be your employers PAYE number with HMRC.

So could someone like a referencing agency determine the company and employer details from this? Or is it confidential to all except HMRC, myself and my employer?

No, no outside organisations would have access to the information in order to cross-reference it to you or the company you work for.
