Hello lovely DFWers. I hope you are having a good weekend. I failed to post this thread yesterday so this one will cover both days
When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.
But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free.
Examples could be charging your phone up at work instead of at home to save your electricity, hanging the washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.
So be proud of those small steps, they really are important.
This weekend I will/have:
- made dinner out of free food given to me
- done a bit of matched betting with a bit more to come
- done a mystery shop
- take back some clothes I bought from Tesco that I don't NEED.
- bought petrol checking petrolprices.com first
- not increased my debt in any way
- not taken the kids ski racing as it would have cost a fortune (DS's contribution as he sits watching me type!)
I hope you are all having a good weekend xx

Morning Hypno and all to follow
This weekend I
- didnt have takeaway
- saved £30 on my big tesco shop with vouchers, special offers
- sold 1st item on ebay
- have got mountain of ironing done so can start the week off on a high as need to do loads of boring paperwork, inc finish off my years books to send to accountant so know what tax is due. Phew that was a long one
- feeling very positive and will keep that attitude.0 -
Went into town yesterday and after hunting round for a free space had to go into one of the multi stories.
Put in £1.40 for the ticket (found in change lying round in the car) checked the reject chute (a habit picked up from my dad) and there was a pound sat in there.
So our parking only cost us 40p! I was so chuffed I couldnt stop smiling for ages.........I must be a true DFW!Mummy to two girls, 4 & 1, been at home for four years, struggling to contend with the terrifying thought of returning to work.0 -
Morning all
I'm going to start posting on this thread if noone minds. I need to remotivate myself and posting things here might increase the chances of actually doing them.
This weekend I have/will:
- got receipts together to send off an expenses claim on Monday
- listed 90+ books on Amazon (thank you freecycle)
- make a start on gathering info for tax return
- 'support' OH to research life insurance optionsTotal debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
Hi hypno, hi all. Hypno, I was in withdrawal yesterday, I'm so glad you posted this thread today!
So, over the weekend in general, I have:
- taken my phone into work to charge.
- rediscovered cornflakes (Sainsbury value brand!) - okay, they're more expensive than oats, but they're still 88p a kilo, its nice to have variety.
- started outlining my new work website - looking at other people's in my line, and found a thread on the mfw forum here with links to a whole series of articles about the tech stuff behind having a website. I think I'm also going to buy a cheap domain name with my Amazon seller name, which I chose quite carefully.
- sorted out a hotel to stay in in London in mid-August - a trip much like hypno's earlier this year, I'm meeting family in Yorkshire to spread my dad's ashes. I have to work in London on Friday night, can't get back home and then back to London to go up to Yorkshire. My mum, bless her, is paying. I'm going to book it via quidco if I can, mutualpoints if not.
- two no-spend days in a row! Got my own little storecupboard challenge going.:money:
- more gardening today - improving the property (!), decluttering (there are bulbs in the house that should be in the ground!), and saving time in the future (if there's proper plants in the ground, I don't have to weed!). :rotfl:
- any surveys that turn up in my inbox.
- amending my total Olympics figure.:T
- I used the gas fire for a bit last night (v cool after relaxing after gardening I've already done) but since Thursday afternoon, my boiler has only been on for a total of one hour! (I'm filthy, of course, but I'm gardening again today, thats my excuse). I'd got complacent about turning it on, but I'm loving this mse thing of actively considering what energy I need to use. And its good for the environment!:A
I'm getting pretty good again on cutting down, but I really need to work on wodges of extra income now, not just tiddly surveys etc - matched betting, spread betting, my work website and a new website (not sure quite what'll be on it yet, but I'm ambitious, you know:D2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Good morning all. Have had a good weekend. All the money I've reclaimed in charges has cleared in my account and along with my savings I should be able to clear the Argos card, the mint card and maybe some off the Halifax card. That still doesn't mean I can take my eye off the ball though! So today I have/will
- checked online banking
- done piggy comps and clicks
- not increased my debts any further
- free lunch at mum's
Hope you all have a good day x0 -
Wow! This is a very positive thread today
Girlracer - that's fantastic about the charges and clearing the argos, mint and some of Halifax. Will make a huge difference!
This weekend I've not done much DFW/MSE but haven't used tumble drier, followed menu plan, got items from freecycle rather than buying them.
Hope everyone has a good day

Good morning all!!
yesterday wasn't very DFW at all, so let's no mention that!!
Today I:- have calculated charges for 2 of hubbies credit cards - on both the charges exceed the current balance, so I hope they will offer to close the accounts!!
- going to list some stuff on ebay - rockport jacket, tresemme hair straighteners etc - should make a few pounds.
- doing a mystery shop
- getting ready to pay some bills tomorrow (snowball)
- going to make a roast dinner tonight rather than having an expensive take away
- washing the clothes at 30 degrees rather than 40.
- going to hand wash the car rather than pay for valeting this month.
Back to work tomoz, so will submit my overtime sheet aswell. It's all good!DFW #414, MoneySaver, Income Booster

Having had a not very DFW half term it's back to belt tightening now! Have dried endless loads of washing outside (it was a very wet holiday!) and have made bread and will be making rolls for this week's lunches. Paid two ccs online as realised cheques wouldn't get there in time - afraid one may incur a late penalty, so fingers crossed. Twice weekly physio sessions have really dented my budget, so I'm now going to trawl the site to make sure I have as many cheap ways as possible to do things for the rest of this month!Resolution:
Think twice before spending anything!0 -
Had a bit of a spend this week but need to get back on the wagon, so to speak! This weekend I have/will:
- went to friend's house for a girlie gossipy night in and only took alcohol that was in the house with me!
- having a bbq for tea today and bought the bare minimum and only having alchohol that's already here again
- piggy and quidco clicks
- dried clothes on airer
can't think of anything else
