HBOS has apologised to more than 60,000 mortgage customers after private information about them was lost in the post.
Bank of Scotland is offering affected customers free protective registration with Cifas, the UK fraud prevention service.

CIFAS registration normally costs £11.75 per year and it's is a password based system.
C.I.F.A.S stands for the Credit Industries Fraud Avoidance System and its primary aim is to protect it's members, ie.the industry. Not all financial service providers are CIFAS members, therefore individuals signing up for CIFAS Protective Registration should be made aware of this. It's quite possible they could still fall victim to ID Theft if their personal data is used to take out a loan from a non-CIFAS member.
For a simpler much more effective proactive means of ID theft protection which is designed to protect the individual then:
