Going to a wedding abroad - what would you give?

So I am going to a wedding abroad and it is costing us quite a lot to go. Back when we accepted the invitation and booked the flights we were in a slightly better financial situation. We got married ourselves recently and they were quite generous to us, so the question is, would you feel as though you had to match their gift?

I don't feel as though I have to 'match' gifts I was given at my wedding. I'm at a wedding this weekend to someone at my wedding and didn't even think about 'matching'.
Its only my opinion but whether its abroad or not to me doesn't matter. My DH went to his friends in Barbados and gave a gift just as though it was here. I think you get given an invite and its up to you whether to acept or not if you know what I mean.
Is there a gift list? They may not want anything due to people travelling out to see them get married. You could ask them for their list and see what they say.
Ultimately, the same as whereever you go as a guest - home or abroad - you give what you can afford and what you want too.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I would give what you want to and can afford. If that doesn't match what they gave you then so be it - people's financial situations can change very quickly, especially in the current economic climate, and someone who genuinely cared about you would just be bothered that you'd turned up and see any presents as a bonus. Especially for a wedding abroad where people are forking out for flights etc.
Agree that it's worth checking if they have a gift list though."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
My friend and her partner came to Italy for our wedding, at quite a cost to them. When we got back I refused to give her my new address on asking as she wanted to send something but she managed to get it anyway and sent us a £70 voucher for a local hotel for a nice meal for us. To say I was upset is an understatement as she had spent enough coming to our wedding and we specifically said we didn't want or need anything more!
Not sure what you could give, we got fun things from other to like a tshirt for two with 'just married' on the front and a few other pieces but really, we didn't want or expect anything.....No longer ...tobe! It may not be what you are thinking - but my nicest gift was a small framed photo from our wedding day - presented to me that same evening. They had thought it through, saved some confetti, to place in the frame. I could take it on honeymoon and loved it - our pics took a few weeks to come back."A wise mum remembers her friends at all times, a foolish mum, only when she has need of them..."0
