Where would we stand on cancelling reception?!

Hi all!
We are having big issues with our reception venue..not replying to emails, calls, confirming anything in writing etc. They have changed event managers 3 times since we booked and nothing that we have disucssed with anyone has been noted down, and nothing is getting sorted at all! we paid a deposit of £500, if we cancelled due to their lack of engagement, so you think we would get this money back from them?
we have wedding inurance but not sure it would cover this as, technically, it would be us cancelling!!

Are they an independent or chain? Try contacting head office or their general manager for intervention, and contact your trading standards office for advice.0
