I am about to set up a small general services business providing a general assistant service of ironing, domestic cleaning and little bit of babysitting if required in parents homes if they have say a hair appt etc....I will be advertising, have business cards etc initially alot of my work will come from over flow from another small cleaning company, however I choose what work I want to take, hours etc when and where and will be invoicing them for my services. I dont have to take any work from them,so can pick and choose what day etc.I will be keeping financial records, invoice books etc based on that info will HMRC class me as self employed or employed as alot of work will be offered from another company but for lots of different clients? this is all very new to me, any help would be great

You'd be classed as a sole trader, they have plenty of guidelines to help set it up. You'll need to tell them and start paying NI contributions.
Good luck with it, I've been self employed 20 years, it has its advantages & disadvantages but great to be your own boss.0 -

Who are "them" that you will be invoicing - the householders or the cleaning company?0 -
I will invoice the cleaning business for any general work I do for their overflow or clients directly on self generated business.anamenottaken wrote: »Who are "them" that you will be invoicing - the householders or the cleaning company?0 -

You asked about whether this would be self-employment or employment. There is a chance, not a certainty, that doing the work off-loaded by the company could be seen as being a casual employee. (Casual employees can pick and choose which work they do, they don't have to accept everything offered to them.)0
