putting money away for x amount of years

Hi can you advise me, whe i was a child my mother used to put money away every month with the "pearl man" for say 10-15 years, and am wondering if such a thing still exists? Im not keep on stocks and shares as my one and only dabble with them lost me a thousand pounds, have two child trust funds but would like to put money away for say 10 years so that we can all have a mega holiday or pay a lump sum towards the uni fees or whatever.
