Wrong Address / Fines

Hi guys

Need some advice.

I was part of a partnership during 2010/2011 while holding full-time job, with a few people from work.

Anyway, we made zero profit and decided to cease trading.

We sent the Partnership tax returns and my own self-assessment forms around that time, march 2011 and letter saying that I'm no longer self-employed.

- HMRC have on record that they received the partnership returns form.
- no record of my returns or me not being self-employed, I'm quite sure I told them that I was no longer self-employed + plus did it online is well.

Now they've been calling for the last couple of months, missed calls, when I called back, no one was aware why I was being called, said outgoing callers don't leave a note.

Anyway couple or so days ago I tried again, now someone was able to find out why, missing self-assessment returns.

Whoever I chatted with said they have my old address, so any reminders sent would have gone to wrong address. The address was changed in 2002.

Considering I did actually get one letter from HMRC telling me I should start self-assessment, after we setup the partnership, I don't see why they had the old address.

That was the only letter I ever got from HMRC.

I tried registering online in 2010, never got the required details through the post, assumed lost in the post but I imagine all communication has been going to the old address. So filled out the form given to me by one of my partners and sent it. Same time as the partnership return.

As you can imagine, that means since 2011 I've not filled in any assessment forms, because I never got any through the post and genuinely thought HMRC was aware that I was no longer self-employed.

The above means fines. Considering the above anyone reckon I can have my fines removed?

Thanks

You can appeal the fines but they will not consider the appeal until the outstanding tax returns come in. Get them in asap and send your appeal in too.

Firstly you need to get those returns filed.

Fines are dependant on tax due so file the returns then any fines can be looked at then.
