Stupid question re: Tights & Onions!

I saw a thread somewhere where someone said about recycling old tight to use to store onions - is this because tights are just a conveniant shape to hold onions in - or because it makes them last longer - should my veg, brocolli, leeks etc all be wrapped in my holey (I have alot of holey!) tights!..... 
I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!

My FIL has an allotment & produces loads of onions. He always stores his in MIL's old tights. Convenient storage & lets the onions "breathe".
Can't ring him to ask because they're on holiday in Cyprus!0
