Carpet cleaning?

I have a large beige coloured rug in the living room that looks like it's in need of a good clean.
I was thinking of buying one of those carpet cleaners that you spray on and hoover out, but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas that might clean it up, rather than me having to go spend money!

I've used Vanish powder on cream carpet before & found it to be very good.0

For a rug I would try a bar of vanish and a scrubbing brush/nail brushRIP Iain
