We have a similar situation at my place. Some people are booked to go away. Does anyone know if they will be entitled to compensation, or do they have to 'take it on the chin'?0

I don't know what the legal position is, but do the management honestly expect to retain these staff if they cancel their leave, cause them to incur costs from a cancelled holiday, and NOT offer anything in return ...We have a similar situation at my place. They don't seem to care these days there are plenty of unemployed out there, and they can probably pay them a bit less as well, Unless its something very specialised or business critical.0 -
I have cancelled my staffs leave at short notice. These were exceptional circumstances though (like winning a new contract, or about lose one), but I have paid any out of pocket expenses with proof (like airline tickets, deposits etc).

True, but they've still got the costs of recruitment and training: we used to have a high staff turnover for one part of our work, and recruitment was an absolute nightmare, as was training - we couldn't let staff work alone until they'd been fully trained and inducted, which meant double staffing when we'd only have had one person on duty - we could have had a queue a mile long for these jobs and it would STILL have been better to retain staff rather than replace them every five minutes!They don't seem to care these days there are plenty of unemployed out there, and they can probably pay them a bit less as well,Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

What impact did it have on staff retention ?
Frankly I'd not want to work for an employer who had no contingency plans for unusual but not unpredictable situations (eg if a new contract comes in presumably it was tendered or at least hoped for). It is simply poor management - and no doubt this extends to other areas of the business too.
If it happened once -it's one thing -if it kept happening I wouldn't be staying. I give an employer commitment -I expect the same in return.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
