We are having a secret garden theme in a community hall and I need to find something to replicate grass for a percentage of the hall..

The main problem I have found so far is the cost and the weight of propper astroturf and the fact that im located down in Pembrokeshire

I need about 100m2 to cover two 5m x 10m areas.

Any ideas? Im looking to spend about £2-3 a meter

I guess just even names of different types of artificial grass would do the job!

Thanks in advance

Could you use actual turf? If you put something on the floor then it would protect it from the soil.
Might be completely impractical as obviously you will need to lay out all the 1.5m long strips but if you have some helpers...

I just bought a load of turf for my garden which was from turfonline.com

    Their Garden Turf
    http://www.turfonline.co.uk/garden-lawn-garden-turf.html
is about £250 for 10 x 10m and they will quote you for delivery charge. You could just freecycle it the next day to get it taken away...? Or maybe the community association would have a use for it?

Please ignore if this is a terrible idea :)

Not a terrible idea but maybe a bit impractical :)

I have a feeling it would get quite messy too..

We have to be out the hall by 12 the next day so something that can get out quickly!

Have a look at the green matting type material that greengrocers sometimes use to cover where they display the fruit and veg...ive no idea what its called but someone might know the stuff I'm talking about.

It might be thin and not lush like astro turf but its probably a lot cheaper...I wonder of you went to a garden centre they may have something on a roll that may be suitable.

Other than that have you thought about a fabric shop...you may be able to get something like green felt on a roll or something furry which might be an alternative

  • I saw artificial turf carpet tiles for sale in B&Q (or similar type store)- they were the same kind of price as the cheap regular carpet tiles and they were meant for indoor use but I cant see them on the site now. But it might be worth searching for that kind of thing.

Type in greengrocers matting into ebay and it will bring up a few results....its not particularly cheap but very possibly cheaper than the artificial grass idea.

The words grass matting also brings up hundreds of combinations...

picked out this one quickly which is certainly out of budget but may give you other options to explore if there are cheaper versions

I think the problem with the greengrocers matts as they are all fairly small so would incrase the chances of someone tripping? Nice idea though, thanks

What about going to a carpet shop and seeing if there is an offcut of something green there that is a room size remanent

Yes I might look into that. I dont know if you can get carpet that looks like it has a grassy effect but worth a try!
