Student loan repayment question

I have a student loan of approx £15000. Until Dec 2012 i worked in the Uk and made SL contributions through my pay check.
In Jan 2013 i started a job in a new country (more £) and have received a letter from the SLC asking where I am.
The letter states they will add the default amount to my account. How? Do they add the mthly amount to the balance instead of a deduction?
Can I just set up a direct debit for an amount i think is appropriate and the letters will stop?

There are amounts depending on where you are based.

They will apply an expected payment to the account, the default for the company. If you have a DD setup you will be forced to pay the default amount. You need to complete the form they send you with your income details.0
