How long can a bottle of whiskey last not sealed?

A neighbour gave The hubby a bottle of whiskey which was left over from a party. It is 3/4s full and for the past 3 weeks has sat on top of our fridge. I don't know how long it has been open before then.
We don't drink whiskey and I was thinking of using it for Xmas cakes (it is whiskey you use isn't it?) but not sure if it would be safe to use.
What's your thoughts?

About 2 days in our house :-)
But seriously ...will be fine.0 -
just about all whiskey is 40% proof, it will last almost indeffinatly, it may lose a bit of taste and colour but will still be fine.
Isn't it usually Brandy you put in cakes etc but i supose there is no reason why you couldnt use whiskey0 -
Well I had a open bottle of Jack Daniels in my room for several weeks until DD appeared and then it disappeared - bottle as well - in slightly under 4 hours!

Theoretically it should last for many years, alcohol is a preservative. Heat and light can degrade the quality but should'nt affect the safety of it, so have a sniff and taste first if it looks odd by Christmas, but if it looks ok just use it. We seldom drink spirits and often have various opened bottles on top of the fridge for years at a time.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

I'll help you with it if you don't fancy it - hehe.
It should be fine but I wouldn't waste it in a cake.

It probably can last longer, but the problem is finding an unopened bottle from an earlier date.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Put it somewhere cool and dark, and at 3/4rs full it should last 6 months, or whenever you make your christmas cake.
Or you could use some of it in whiskey marmalade.
It is whiskey isn't it, the Irish stuff? Only if it's decent Scottish Single Malt it would be a hanging offence to add it to marmalade.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
