I applied online for a nationwide loan and got the following response.

We are sorry to inform you that Nationwide Building Society cannot offer you a loan on this occasion.

We have reached this decision after careful consideration of all the information you provided, together with the conduct of your existing accounts with Nationwide Building Society.

If you have additional information to support your application that you feel may affect our decision please contact Nationwide Building Society. You will need to quote your reference number

You have the right to appeal for an assessment of your application by one of our advisers. However, unless the details you've supplied us with are incorrect or have changed in any way it is unlikely we'll be able to assist you any further with your Personal Loan application.

Lots of people will get a message like that. It's a generic decline message. Don't take it personally.

Do you have ANY charges on your account, missed ANY payments, gamble, have no money left at the end of any month, constantly overdrawn?

Does it show that you save any money?

Does it show that you fritter it all away on nights out?

Together with (other information) is the key, not necessarily the conduct of your NW account itself, particularly if it's 'fine'. The post above indicates ways in which NW themselves might not view your conduct as 'fine', though.

However, if it is 'fine' overall - and even if 'everything else' that forms part of your overall financial picture is fine, then unfortunately inexplicable declines do occur on occasion. There's a benchmark which takes into account various factors, and varies by lender, and unfortunately you didn't meet it. That's not to say that you are 'bad' in any way, though :)

You sure its fine, what maybe fine to you is a different fine to NW.

Dear God that's cynical! I'm sure they don't check whether you're frittering away on nights out - besides who cares if you do if you can manage the loan.

As others have said it's purely generic; based on your accounts with Nationwide, and others information it's declined. If you're a saint with Nationwide and a sinner with others that's a problem!

Just means they don't want your business, they don't have to say why you just don't fit their profile for unsecured lending.
