Wedding insurance

Options
I'm noticing that there is a lot of mention of wedding insurance.

I've looked into it a little and see that some cover you for a one off payment of £18ish.

Surely not?! Is this right or is there something fishy? I would have thought that it would be the same as any other insurance policy, with monthly premiums to pay.

Am I missing something?

  • I think I paid more like £35 for my policy, but I would imagine there are cheaper out there - just check what it covers and how much it covers, I think I saw policies that were cheaper but did not cover as much as I needed.

A one-off premium is pretty standard, think of it in the same way as purchasing a single trip travel policy for a holiday.

Same with car insurance, you can just pay up front. it's just that wedding insurance covers a varied time period depending when your wedding is

  • Most insurance policies - not just those for weddings - allow either one-off payments or monthly instalments, although quite often the monthly instalments cost more, and obviously as with other types of insurance your payment will vary depending on the cost of what you're insuring. Our rough yardstick is about £70, but then our wedding is going to cost around £15k, so I guess if you were having, say, a £5k wedding it would be a lot cheaper.

We haven't got our wedding insurance yet (I know, I know, but I wanted to finalise the budget first) but will probably pay for it all in one go as the ones we've looked at seem to all work to that model and aren't horrendously expensive if you do it like that.

Ours was about £30 I think but they can afford to be cheap as if you think about the majority never claim.

There are some good low cost policies out there. We paid about £35 for ours. The important thing is to check the terms of what they cover. Some won't pay out for anything that you've already put any payment on before taking out the policy. Some won't cover for anything that could be covered under a diferent policy eg a theft from the home of wedding gifts may be covered under home contents insurance. Some will cover gifts at the venue, some won't. And in the event of the whole thing having to be cancelled (eg you or groom taken ill the day before the wedding) you need to know how much will be covered given that by then you will have probably paid for pretty much everything in full
  • Thanks folks. Our wedding is gonna cost about 5K so that seems about right.

We didn't have it! I'd read up a lot on it and in the end just though I'm going to risk it, in my eyes itching was going to go wrong. Maybe a little naive! But nothing did go wrong so didn't need it anyways :D

I'm a wedding photographer and something happened at my last wedding which made me realise that insurance shouldn't be scrimped upon.

The hotel I was at over the weekend had a security incident meaning the police closed the hotel down for over two hours but it easily could have been longer.

Luckily all the suppliers bent over backwards to get everything back on track, including the registrars who drove back especially after all their other weddings had finished.

But had the incident gone on...or the registrars been unable to return then that would have been it. Without insurance it would have been a VERY costly reschedule. Everyone including myself would have been expected to be paid again.

After this weekends experience, I'm very glad we've shelled out for our policy. It was only £35 which given our potential losses is a good deal I think.

Can I ask which insurers you all use? We're booking our venue at the end of the week and I want to get insurance sorted before then.
