    Have you checked the dimensions?
Will the fridge fit through your door or not?

Remember that you took their advise, and on their advise you were told to refuse the delivery.
(Perhaps because they did not want to unpack it and manhandle it through the narrow gap?)

I would be strongly saying that it was only refused because their delivery men told you to do so and that it would fit through the door (if it does).

BTW, how wide is your doorframe and how deep is the unit?

It is lazy deliverymen, who have perfected a line of patter to save the effort of even lifting this type of appliance off the van.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

As the service offered is doorstep delivery only, this indicates that the delivery men are not experienced in bringing large items into the home, and/or not covered by insurance for damage or injury to themselves or the item they are bringing to you. I personally avoid buying large items that state doorstep delivery only.

Usually when buying large items the onus is on the customer to ensure that items will fit into the premises & though you say you had discussed the possibility of there being a problem with access, the person you spoke to in all likelihood had no knowledge of any return costs.

It was a serious oversight of yours not to query the cost of transporting the appliance back to base should it not fit into your home. I think sadly that it is going to be an expensive lesson for you. I hope you do manage to negotiate the charge down further anyway.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

The Distance Selling Regulations only allow the retailer to recover reasonable costs incurred from delivering the goods back to them

It allows them to recover the direct cost of restoration, not reasonable costs. May seem pedantic, but there is a difference
